About Nyonya Cuisine

Nyonya cuisine is quite unique. It came about after the arrival of a Chinese princess and a following of 500 people to marry the Sultan of Malacca (Melaka) as a gesture by the Emperor of China to foster better relations with this important port. At this time, Melaka was a very strategic point in the middle of the Spice Route. They settled on Bukit Cina which has since been built over.

The legacy of this political marrige is the emergence of a new race the Babas and Nyonyas. They created Nyonya cuisine by using Chinese cooking techniques and incorporating local herbs and spices. This is one of the original fusion cuisines and every dish is highly fragrant and has very unusual and distinctive flavourings.

To date, recipes are passed down from mother to daughter and are closely guarded family secrets.
